Frequently Asked Questions

What are worship services like at First Congregational?

Worship at First Congregational touches the heart, engages the mind and inspires our hands to act in service. Our Sunday morning services blend traditional and more contemporary elements to connect us with our past while remaining relevant in the present. Our preaching is rooted in the biblical story while seeking to draw connections of meaning and guidance to our lives today.

What kind of music will I hear in worship services?

First Congregational offers spirited and artful music in a wide variety of styles ranging from traditional hymns to African drumming and jazz. The Sanctuary Choir is the musical centerpiece of our services, and guest ensembles and soloists frequently enrich our worship experience.

What is First Congregational’s stance on the LGBTQ community?

We hold a value of inclusiveness that leads us to embrace diversity wherever we find it. We honor and value each person for who God created them to be in their whole person without attempting to “fix” or “change” anyone, and we have been privileged to celebrate same-gender weddings at our church for over twenty years.

Can I participate in Communion at First Congregational?

We celebrate Communion on the first Sunday of each month. We believe that God's Communion table is open; all are welcome to partake of the elements.

How do I become a member of First Congregational?

We offer one-day Membership Exploration Classes several times during the program year for those who are considering membership with First Congregational United Church of Christ. This class, led by our staff and accompanied by contributions from the lay leadership of the church, explores the history and polity of the United Church of Christ, the history and programs of First Congregational UCC, the faith and theology of the church, discernment of spiritual gifts for serving God, and the meaning of church membership and opportunities to serve the church.

I’d like to buy a Bible. What do you recommend?

In worship we use the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, which is written in modern English and favors inclusive language. Our fourth graders receive the Good News Bible, a translation that is accessible to children and those who are learning English. The Message, which draws from the direct, casual English used in our daily lives, is also a meaningful translation. If you are looking for a study Bible, please contact our pastors for a recommendation that meets your needs.
