Getting To Know You!

Greetings!

It has been an amazing first few months getting to know your youth, and having them as part of the Middle or High School Ministry here at First Congo. We have had the opportunity to not only grow deeper in our faith, but to also serve others in need. We have such a vibrant group of youth involved in the ministry here, and it has led to a great variety of ideas with a lot of creativity!

As we continue to grow closer together in our ministry here, I would also like you to have the chance to get to know me as well. Therefore, my wife and I would like to extend an invitation for your family to join us for dinner at our house, or if you prefer, just some time to visit and get to know each other better somewhere over coffee!  My goal for this is to be able to reach each family involved with the Middle and High School Ministries by the end of the school year. So please don't feel pressured to schedule it right away…we’ll spread the visits throughout that timeframe. Please know that if this is something you are not comfortable with that is completely okay!

If your family would like to participate, please feel free to either email me at jmorien@firstcongoappleton.org or give me a call here at church. My office number is (920) 733-7393 Ext. 247. It is an honor to be the Director for Youth Ministries here at First Congo and I look forward to getting to know you and your family more!

Hope you are doing well,

Joel Morien

God's Love & Faithfulness

This past week’s election has been a significant event both in the life of our nation, and for many of us personally. Some of us are enthusiastic, while some of us are concerned and hurting. Some of these concerns and hurts have affected our youth and children in unique ways.

We have become aware that bullying, racist remarks, and hateful speech have significantly increased post election in our schools. We are aware that a number of students in our church have witnessed or been the recipients of these unjust and cruel actions.
We are reaching out to all our families and reminding them that First Congregational Church is a safe, inclusive, and loving place for all people - regardless of race, sexuality, gender, or anything else. We want your children to be clear that they are fully welcomed here, and we want to help them know how to respond.

Just as 3 John says:  Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good. Whoever does good is from God.

So we are doing two things
First: We will review age appropriate anti-bullying materials with all children & youth within the next two weeks. We will create safe spaces for young people to express concerns if they have them. We will remind them of our call to treat others with love and justice.
Second: For those who are hurting or have been recipients of unjust treatment, we invite you to come to a candlelight prayer vigil on Tuesday evening, November 15 at 6:30 PM in the Chapel. This prayer meeting will be a safe space to share our concerns, offer up prayers for our nation, and hear words of hope amidst a challenging time for us all. Your Pastors invite you to be present, all ages are welcome.

Let us all take heart in God’s faithfulness, and trust that in the end God’s love will overcome the hurt of our world.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Nick Hatch, Kristin Underwood & Joel Morien

This is a one-way texting service that allows high school youth who have signed up to receive notifications about Wednesday night small groups. With Remind, the church will never know who signed up and there cannot be any one-on-one communication. Parents are also welcome to sign up if they also want text reminders, just keep in mind the reminders are meant for high school youth. In order to receive texts, send a text to phone number 81010 and write @fcucchs in the message. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Peace!

Youth Needed for Pastoral Search Team!

Hello everyone!

We are extending an open invite for a high school youth to join our search team for a permanent pastor position, a Pastor for Congregational Life. The search team will be meeting approximately once a month and we would like a youth to be part of the process. It is important to have a youth be part of the team. This youth would have direct input on the role of the pastor in the church, be able to help with the interview process and help with the final selection of a candidate. Making the pastoral search team accurately represent the church will help to most clearly communicate who we are. So, if you have a child that is looking for a meaningful way to be involved with the life of this church, this is an excellent possibility.

The Search Team:

  • will meet approximately once a month.
  • will be commissioned this Sunday in church, so their work is just starting and it’s a good time for a youth to be on board.
  • will continue their work until the right candidate is called.

Want to know more details? Express interest? Please email Pastor Nick.

Peace!

Pastor Nick

There are a lot of ways you can participate: reading, ushering, greeting, praying, the list goes on! There is something for everyone! We are counting on you being there and bringing some creative energy. I am positive that this service will be very meaningful for the entire church and it would be a privilege to lead worship with you.

Sunday April 17th 10:30 in Fellowship Hall: Come for rehearsal and practice (It is necessary to make this rehearsal)
Sunday April 24th 8:30 and possibly 10:30 services: Lead an awesome Healing Service to bring hope and joy to our church members and families.

We especially welcome youth to bring solo or ensemble music to offer for different uses in the service! I hope to see you all of you this Sunday as we work together to share God's hope and love.

April in High School Ministry!

Hello everyone!

We have some really cool stuff coming up in April so don't miss out on the opportunities to connect here at First Congo.

1. High School small groups will pick back up on Wednesdays, April 6, 13, 20, and 27. Meet in Common Grounds from 6:30-7:30 PM for fellowship, discussion and a time to just connect here at church before the summer sets in!

2.  On April 27 there will be a healing service at First Congo lead by children and youth . It will be an opportunity to experience a laying on of hands, lighting of candles, and extended prayers for those who are hurting or carrying new or old pains that would like to place them before Christ. It should be a very meaningful service and I hope our youth really get involved. High schoolers are invited on Sunday, April 13 from 10:30-11:30 AM in the Common Grounds to hear about the service and get involved. If you want to be involved, please come to this! There will be a mandatory rehearsal Sunday, April 20 from 10:30-11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall.

3. We are now in the process of hiring two new, three-quarter time youth directors; a Director for Middle School Ministries and a Director for High School Ministries. While I (Pastor Nick) will still run confirmation and be involved in high school ministries and probably start more family ministries, the number of students we are trying to minister to far exceeds our current staffing pattern! Your church needs your help in finding talented candidates who would like to be part of a highly trained and committed children's and youth staff. Very soon two job descriptions will be available on our website, please review those and encourage strong applicants to apply.

Grace and Peace!

High School Winter News

Happy New Years!

I hope your new year is starting off wonderfully and that the holiday season served as a strong reminder of God’s presence and love for you. A copy of the winter/spring High School schedule is attached. Note that we have a lot going on for high school youth these months! Why not try out a small group (10th - 12th grade students) to get to know other people better? How about coming on the mission trip and attending the informational meeting in January? Could you offer your skill for our youth worship service in April? I hope to see as many youth as possible these coming months. If there is anything we can do to encourage and share about all the wonderful things taking place, don’t hesitate to reach out (hatch@firstcongoappleton.org).

Here are a few important happenings in High School ministry just in time for the Christmas season.

  1. This Wednesday, December 16, from 7:30-8:30 PM (or later) we are having a Christmas service project. We will bake cookies and make Christmas cards for about 100 residents of Peabody Manor. Please bring some nut-free cookie dough. If you're not in Confirmation, feel free to show up early, anytime after 6:30 PM, to start baking and decorating. We need your help!
  2. Sign up for the mission trip! Our registration is over half full, but I know there are a number of youth who have not yet signed up for the mission trip who are planning on going. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sign up before Christmas so we can plan our trip wisely and not get into a financial crunch! Fill out and return the 2015 Youth Mission Expectations sheet/Emergency Medical Consent Form with the $100 non-refundable deposit ASAP! Questions? Email Pastor Nick.

Why Not Join a Small Group?

Happy (almost) New Year!

Just a couple quick reminder from High School ministry to start the year off right!

1. Why not join a small group this winter and spring? Small groups start next Wednesday, January 7, from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Common Grounds. We have great conversations, and we will be starting our Lent study that night. Want to know more about God, about the journey to the cross, and understand Lent a little better? Our study will come from 24 Hours that Changed the World, a series that helps us understand our lives through the lens of the last day of Christ's life.

2. There will no longer be Sunday morning Caffeine! We have found that Wednesday evenings are going very well this year, and it seems to be the best time frame for everyone. So, high schoolers can join their families on Sundays and come on Wednesdays for good conversation and fellowship.

3. Want to serve at Homeless Connections (Emergency Shelter)? On January 11, 7-9:30 AM a group of youth will be serving breakfast and having fellowship together. For the mission trip two breakfasts are required. Contact Renee Taylor to get signed up.

Have a happy and safe New Year's!

Apple Pies and Small Groups!

Pies and Pals!

Yes, that was a silly start, but here is your friendly reminder for two important opportunities:

We are baking apple pies this Sunday at 11:30 AM. We need your student involved to pick, bake and, at around 2:30 PM, deliver 150 pies to our homebound and those in need to love and grace. A pizza lunch will be provided. We will meet at 11:30 AM in the Pathways parking lot, return here for lunch, bake, and then deliver pies.

  • All students must have a current liability form completed. Please ask the church office for a liability form if you need one.
  • Please register online for High School Caffeine, Confirmation or High School Small Groups. (Everyone in Confirmation and Small Groups is automatically added to High School Caffeine).
  • Parents: If you plan on coming with us to the orchard you must have a background check on file and be in the process of completing your SafeConduct™ training. You do not need a background check to deliver pies with your own family members present, and we are asking that every family involved deliver at least one pie.
  • Everyone: Please visit http://tinyurl.com/pagwa9k to sign up so we know who to expect!

Small Groups Begin Soon

Sign up for a high school small group! Small groups meet Wednesday evenings 6:30-7:30 PM starting October 8 and are the primary way for high school students to remain involved with our faith community over the course of the year after confirmation. Registration is going well! In order to get your student involved, we need parents to register your youth on the church membership portal and select "High School Small Groups."  Haven't been to the portal? We have a online tutorial showing how to set up your profile.

We have two great opportunities that we want you to get involved with this week!

  •  Sign up for a high school small group! • The 2015 Youth Mission trip to the Bahamas is already overbooked! We have more youth and adults than we were anticipating taking. Unlike other years, we will need to close registration very soon since we will not be able to add anyone after November 1. If your student is planning on getting involved with the mission trip, they need to sign up very soon. First sign-up with Next Step Ministries, then fill out our online forms, and send them along with a $100 non-refundable deposit to the church office. More info is found on the church website.

High School Ministry Parent Orientation!

Parent Orientation!

I am inviting you to attend a Parent Orientation to High School Ministry this Wednesday, September 10 from 7-7:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. PARENTS ONLY!

Parents, did you know that:

  1. In the last 3 years, over 80% of students who attended a mission trip stay involved with church for the rest of their high school experience?
  2. Your involvement in your child's spiritual growth and connection to the church is perhaps the most significant relationship that helps to encourage their participation? Why not have all the info and ask all the questions to help them be involved?
  3. Every year we have over 70 ADULTS who help First Congo be a place where your high school student can continue to grow in faith beyond confirmation and mission trips?

And there is so much more to know! So, come to the parent orientation this Wednesday. I will give a brief overview of the different opportunities in the ministry and introduce key volunteers! We will also have treats and computers available for online sign-up. There is a middle school orientation from 6:30-7:00 PM the same night in case you want to attend both!

Hope to see you this Wednesday!

Youth Mission Sunday!

Hello everyone!

Our mission trip to Cincinnati, Ohio was another incredible experience! Thanks to our many youth, their positive attitude, and willingness to serve in the ways they were called. Thanks to a great chaperone team! Thanks parents for the many ways you supported this experience and prioritized it in your family's life! I hope you were able to read our mission trip blog found at http://www.firstcongoappleton.org/blogs/ontheroad/ , but if not feel free to read it now and get a glimpse into the experience.

This Sunday, July 27 from 9:30-10:30 AM is our Youth Mission Testimony Sunday.

I am very excited about worship this Sunday. Three students and I have been working very hard at preparing testimonies communicating how God moved in their life this past week and how their faith was challenged. Their testimonies are genuine and meaningful and I hope you will come.

The Stockholder brunch is from 10:30-11:30 AM.

If you are a stockholder, your brunch is free. If not, there is a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 max for a family. Everyone is invited. We will hear funny stories, celebrate the generosity and mission of our group, and see a slideshow of our week together along with eating great pancakes!

The 2015 youth mission trip has over 20 youth who have already handed in the $100 non-refundable deposit. You will be able to sign up for this experience on Sunday. Originally we limited the trip to 30 students: help us determine how many youth will actually participate by signing up now! We have more adults interested than we can take and will be making an application process for this in August.

Not sure if Jamaica 2015 is for you? Talk to Pastor Nick!

CYF Sunday!

Hello Everyone!

This Sunday, May 4, is Children and Youth Sunday. The Student Action Leadership Team (SALT) has chosen to host the last Open Door Sunday: Being Open to the LGBTQ Community. I am excited about the work the SALT team has done to shape our worship experience, and am so thankful to the LGBTQ members of First Congo who have chosen to work so diligently on testimonies. This is a great Sunday for you to invite family members and to support the excellent ministry of our talented youth!

Here are a few important reminders:

1. Still want to get involved? Contact Pastor Nick and I'll see what I can do!

2. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the service you are involved with (8:15 AM for 8:45 AM service, 10:00 AM for 10:30 AM service). Attached you will find a roster saying where in the service each youth is involved and what each are doing. I have also included a DRAFT script for each youth to practice. A final script will be provided Sunday morning.

3. At 10:10 AM we will have a group picture (for everyone!) on the chancel- don't be late! Between services we will have food and music in the Common Grounds.

Grace and Peace!

March & April HS Ministry!

March is Mission Prep!

And we are in the full swing of things. Remember that you don't have to be going on the mission trip to come on Wednesday evenings. This is mandatory for mission folks but everyone is invited to attend. Thanks to the 40+ people who came last week.

- Just a friendly reminder that we DO NOT have Sunday youth group the rest of March.

- Our next big event is the Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast on April 13! All high school youth are invited to come from 8:00-11:00 AM to prepare and serve a large meal for the church. The meal will occur between services from 9:45-10:30 AM. Make sure and mark this on your calendar because we will need all the help we can get!

- April 27 is Youth Sunday practice from 10:30-11:30 AM in Fellowship Hall. Anyone interested or already participating in Youth Sunday needs to be at rehearsal. We are looking for readers, communion servers, musicians, and perhaps a short interpretive dance. If your student wants to be part of Youth Sunday, send Pastor Nick an email!

- May 4 is Youth Sunday: Open Door Sunday: Being open to the LGBT community.

Some friendly Updates!

Hello all!

Just a freindly couple of reminders for you as we begin to change gears in the high school youth ministry and focus on our mission prep for the month of March!

Sunday, March 9 @ 10:30 AM: Youth Group in Common Grounds

Wednesday, March 12, 19 & 26 @ 6:30-7:45 PM: Mission preparation in Common Grounds! Remember that this is a MANDATORY requirement for mission trip participation. During our three meetings we will get to know one another, learn about poverty in Ohio, and be challenged by lessons that match the theme of our mission trip this summer: Rebuild. Attendance will be taken at each meeting. You are allowed one excused absence unless other arrangments are made with Pastor Nick (please email me). See you Wednesday night!

A little help: We are still in need of one more excited adult chaperone! This person needs to have a heart to serve, flexibility to travel with a group, and willingness to positively impact others during the week of July 13-19! Can be male or female, over the age of 21. Please contact Pastor Nick if you are interested.

First Congo Senior High Pizza Supper

Hi! This is just a friendly reminder about the Pizza Supper tomorrow night (Feb 2nd) at 6:00PM. If you have not made reservations, please do so ASAP with Maja. We want to have enough pizza here for everyone. Also, if you are at the musical rehearsal at 5:30, you will be dismissed around 6:20 to have time to eat pizza before Wednesday Night LYFE discussion.

I know weather is a concern with the upcoming storm that may or may not hit us. Here is our policy on weather cancellations

1. If Appleton Public Schools are closed due to bad weather, classes at First Congregational U.C.C. will also be cancelled.

2. If Appleton Public Schools are in session, but the weather deteriorates during the afternoon and evening, check our web site to find out if classes have been cancelled. If possible, we will post any cancellations by 3:00 p.m. Our web address is: www.firstcongoappleton.org

3. If classes have not been cancelled, but you feel the conditions are too hazardous for travel, please stay home! (We realize that some of you either travel a long way to get here, or live in the country where conditions may be different than in the city of Appleton.)
