Adult Roles in Nurturing Our Youth

These roles are sorted ascending by age. We invite all volunteers interested in working with youth to complete a few preparatory steps, including an application, background check and an online training session. To get started, please contact Children, Youth and Families.

Infant Nursery/Toddler Room Caretakers

Come spend some time caring for our youngest members and guests during worship. During the program year, September–May, two assistants are needed for each room during each service. In the summer, the two rooms are combined. A monitor is available in the infant nursery so that you may take part in worship even while you serve.

Preschool Teachers

Preschool teachers commit to single units of five to seven weeks each. Teachers teach a simple Bible story each week coupled with an art project or other fun activity that helps reinforce the story. Pick and choose the activities you are most comfortable with! All materials and supplies will be ready to go when you get to church so that you can focus on the lesson and getting to know the children.

Church School Teachers

We are in need of storytellers, chefs, artists, scientists, computer geeks, and many others to make the Bible come to life for our students. Church School teachers are asked to commit to six-week units during which they apply their personal gifts and talents towards teaching a single workshop to a different age group each week. Through our workshop rotation system, teachers connect with every child in the Church School ministry. Children are excited by the variety and creativity in this approach and are eager to participate in the lessons each week.

CYF staff members purchase and set up all supplies and activities, allowing teachers to focus on the lesson and nurturing their students.

Children's Ministry Team

This group is dedicated to developing a vision for our children’s ministry and acts as a sounding board for the Director for Children's Ministries. The team meets about once a month during the program year to shape curriculum, develop volunteer roles in the ministry and plan events. If you want to help make a difference in the faith journey of our children, this team is for you.

Confirmation Mentor

Confirmands request a member to serve as their mentor during their year in confirmation. Confirmand/mentor teams work in pairs, allowing for some flexibility with your schedule. Mentoring is a wonderful opportunity to guide a fellow Christian through a year-long journey of faith formation. Meeting times are on Wednesday evenings, and mentors participate in the laying on of hands on Confirmation Sunday, which takes place in September after the year of study is completed.

Although mentors serve by request, we will gladly hear of your interest in taking on this role.

High School Small Group Leaders

Come share your faith and connect with First Congo’s high school youth by leading a small fellowship and discussion group for high school students in grades 10–12. The groups meet in seven-week sessions that take place during the fall and spring.

Special Project Volunteers

From time to time we assemble teams to enact a special project on behalf of our youth. Several of these teams work on the annual high school mission trip. Other teams assist with Youth Sunday, youth-hosted fellowship events, mission work and more.
