Confirmation

Confirmation classes are offered to students ninth grade and older as they are led into a deeper exploration of their faith in preparation for church membership.  Confirmation is the beginning of a lifelong process of discipleship for those who wish to seek the guidance of God and follow the example of Jesus throughout their faith pilgrimage.

Confirmation in our church has four components:

• Class time that devotes our attention to the first basic question of Christian faith: Who Is Jesus? Through Bible study, presentation of historical sources, and creative discussion, confirmands will review the ways in which the Church has answered the question of Jesus’ identity and arrive at answers of their own;
• Experiential learning through trips that explore different Christian practices and world religions. Together we will be attending worship at a synagogue, a mosque, local Catholic and Lutheran churches, and at an African-American church in Chicago. We will learn to identify and respect differences between various Christian and world religious traditions;
• Scheduled meeting times with mentors to help guide students along their faith journey. Adult mentors won’t provide a road map along the way to faith but will share their own journey with the Confirmands. This will help equip students to find answers to the second basic question of Christian faith: What is a Disciple?
• Preparation of a Faith Statement as the Confirmands prepare for church membership. Drawing on the experience, wisdom, and guidance of high school students who have recently been confirmed into church membership, they will begin the important task of faith confession, giving creative expression to a faith that is both shared by all in the church and radically personal.

Classes generally meet the first three Wednesdays of the month from 6:30-7:30. Outside trips and experiences generally occur every other month.
